simple snack

When my kids were younger (because they didn't know any different), it wasn't a problem getting them to eat whole wheat bread... and the crust.  So, this has been a simple and somewhat healthy snack solution growing up in our house.  As a rule that is what you will find around here... simple.

Cinnamon Toast ~ Bread, butter, cinnamon sugar.  Under the broiler on low for about 3-4 minutes.

And to make things even simpler, this is my cinnamon/sugar shaker.  It's a cocktail shaker!  I love this because it holds a lot.  My old one was vintage aluminum.  It served us for at least 15 years, the last 2 or 3 without it's lid.  I don't know how I lost it... but I did.  It wasn't a big deal, but when I spotted this brand new one at a yard sale for a dollar (with the lid), it was time for a replacement!  I also use the cinnamon and sugar in my cinnamon bread and on coffee cakes...

She's sleek!  Kinda turns the preparation of my simple fare into something with a bit more class.  Perhaps this upgraded snack needs a new name.  From now on I'll call it... La cannelle pain.  That's French, I just Googled it.  Hmm...I took Spanish...  I think now I'd better Google the pronunciation.  Hard to sound classy with bad pronunciation, oui?

Blessings, Debbie

  7. That is a good idea, I have used the shaker thing that Parmesan cheese comes in for cinnamon/sugar but that one looks way more classy. I use a bunch of it too.
That has been my kids standby since I showed them how to make it once they were old enough to learn to cook.
It was the first thing I learned to make when I was a kid.
That and a cup of hot chocolate is just the best.

  8. My Aunt Dot always made us buttered toast -- under the broiler with just butter, along with hot chocolate made on the stove with milk. The bread was always white back then but boy oh boy was it good.

My mom used to make sugar cheese toast for my dad. White bread, American cheese topped with sugar and broiled. I wouldn't it it now, but definitely could go for some cinnamon toast.

Will be making it for the kids along with hot chocolate when the days get cooler -- maybe December. :/

Hope you had a great trip. Best wishes, Tammy

  13. I have to admit that I'm not a crust eater...don't know why but the dog is happy because he gets what I don't eat:) Cool use of a cocktail shaker. I think I have one stashed somewhere I might try and find it and put it to use. I don't remember ever using it to make a cocktail...

  14. Wheat bread was a bit of a shock to me as a child. I was brought up on Wonderbread commercials and was dedicated to that soft, squishy, sweet stuff. My mother became health conscious and wheat came onto the scene - but it wasn't much better than the white - until she started making her own. I made my own bread when we were first married - four or five loaves at a time, all by hand. But I wearied of that when we had kids. Then G sold his favorite electric guitar and bought me a Bosch maker, which I used for years. Somehow, we drifted away from home made for years. Now G is the gourmet bread maker, using a high-class bread machine and his own recipes. So my kids never had a chance - they were brought up on multigrain, whole wheat - and home made crusts taste GREAT. With cinnamon and butter, hot out of the oven - heaven.

    pronunciation: La cannelle pain

The "la" sounds as expected, a little more soft than the spanish, perhaps

can-elle. You speak the two "l's" lovingly, allowing the tip of your tongue to linger on the palette at the end, not so much as to add a vowel sound at the end (which would sound Italian), but with the hint that a schwa still shimmers at the end of them.

"pain" - it's "Pa" but you end the sound way up in your sinus - your nose. A very high "angh" with that open air "gh" at the end.

    Right. I've helped, huh?

  28. I love the cocktail shaker! Genius! I have been giving the kid a bedtime snack of toast with honey, but I think this might work better, since cinnamon is relaxing too, and probably cheaper than honey (since I try and buy the good stuff, lol).
