"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! when the kids are away...

See the blurry spatula?  That blur isn't because my husband is 'Speedy Spatula' when it comes to grilling.  It's because he was cooking in the dark and I had to set the camera on night setting which meant the shutter had to stay open long enough to get the image.  Are we the only lunatics who can't seem to get a meal on the table before 8:00 in the summertime?

I had the chicken marinating for 2 hours in the hopes that we would have dinner at a decent hour this time.  I went ahead and cooked the corn early too, just leaving it in the warm pot to wait.  I sliced the beautiful home-grown tomato (that's 5 now!) early too.  It all just sat there... waiting.  I have a busy beaver hubby who can't seem to stop until he can't see.  Maybe I should just throw blinders on him at 6:00.  I only just thought of that!

The girls are house sitting at the pony ranch, so Larry and I were taking a practice run at being empty nesters.  I really enjoyed the laid back, quiet evening... who am I fooling?  Even from 15 miles away I could hear their voices.  Who invented the telephone anyway?

"Hi mom, is it raining there?  Because it looks like there's going to be a storm here."

"Hi mom, one of the ponies was mad because we were putting her in the stable without her friend and she kept pulling and pulling..."

"Hi mom, we were watching a show about pregnant ladies having babies.  One lady had her baby and it was sooo ugly.  It looked like Gollum from Lord of the Rings.  Later she was sooo cute!"

"Hi mom, can tree frogs swim?"

"Hi mom, Audrey was taking a bath so I used the dimmer switch and turned her light down low, then I put on a movie that had slow, quiet, music...  No, she got mad!"

Ah well, Its' a good thing that their father and I love them so!  Maybe just for fun, I'll wait until midnight and call them.

"Hi girls, what do you think about the current economic crisis... 'kay, bye!"

Blessings, Debbie

  1. Teenagers are exhausting, fascinating, exasperating, have boundless energy and an insatiable appetite for life and they are the most wonderful people to be around.........life's never dull, that's for sure.

Hope you enjoyed your lovely romantic alfresco dining experience, minus your teens.

  3. Oh - I don't know - mine always seem to come back - or follow me. And you know - I am so happy about that. Just off to meet one of my daughters this morning.
    Enjoy your honeymoon week. xxx

ps - love your beautiful new header, even if it does make me feel I should be cleaning. x

  4. Hey, you changed your header! It is lovely. Is that were I will sit when I come to vist [ by way of the back door of course]?
I have had a few of those calls myself when Mike and I have had a [rare] night home alone. I call mine back early in the morning, since I am up and moving at 5:00a.m. and they love to sleep in, just to 'check on them'. Hey, mom's have to make their own fun! And no, we are still eating late too and cleaning up the kitchen at 10:00:) xx

  5. Enjoy every moment.... I'll not lie, there are some great things about empty nests... but, then there's the fact that they are empty.

Love your new header photo!! I wanna be right in that kitchen with a cup of coffee looking out that window! blessings ~ tanna

  8. Really like your new header, such a cozy room. I don't know if having dinners late is a summer thing or an empty nester thing but it is something that happens at our house all the time. Enjoy the teens, empty nests are delightful but they are also pretty quiet

  9. Sounds like a good night right there!
We went to bed at 7:30 last night! I was such a tired Pom Pom.

  10. Maybe we need to start a club for the wives of husbands that can't sit still. I think it's wonderful that your daughters want to tell you everything.

  12. I guess the quote out of sight out of mind doesn't apply in this case, but it sounds like you had a nice evening to enjoy as a couple just the same. JB

  13. ha ha! I can relate to this so much. I giggled about the idea for the midnight call. I also giggled about the blinders.

  14. Lol!
Yes, we cannot EAT before EIGHT in the summer--and then it's off to bed for three girls who just DON'T stay in bed. I had to finally tell my 14 year old, "Go away please, or even just go to sleep" last night. She is my night owl and my ears were just so TIRED.

Your header is so pretty. I love the light, the calm, the warmth of that little area!
Glad you got to have some couple time.

  15. Oh empty nest hummm I just seem to get used to it and they come back for a few weeks to rest. :0 I love this. You have a close relationship with your kids and it shows I am lucky enough to have that also.
I do enjoy the empty nest times though. B

  16. Sounds like a great night to me. Your girls cracked me up. I have a 7 year old that simply won't/can't stop talking. Some days, I just have to tell him that we need some quiet.

  17. I had to chuckle at this. [o= I guess this is one difference with boys and girls. My boys don't call that much when away. I do like your idea of calling at midnight, lol. I know you probably wouldn't do it but getting to think about it is just as good as doing it. I am the same way, lol.

    Blessings and ((HUGS))!

  18. Seeing that I have been a mother for almost 29 years (in October) and my youngest is only eight ( or maybe I should reword that, already eight), The reality of an empty nest is not even a spark. However, my husband and I do have special dinners at home from time to time ...arrange a table for two, feed the girls early and give them a movie night upstairs, light the candles, put on some sentimental, romantic music...and pretend we are alone.

  19. Cute post. Girls always call their mama wherever they may be! xo,

  20. Oh that 8:00 supper looks so good! We tend to eat late during the summer months too -- round about dark-thirty.

We are just starting our new empty-nesting and so far we have far more phone calls and unexpected and expected guests than ever. Probably it will let up when the snow flies.

  22. I want to know - is your husband also a cut-up, or do you provide all the entertainment in the household?
I think you *should* make that late-night call!

  26. I like your new header too. Look like a great place to have a chat and a morning cuppa. My almost 13 year old is nonstop with the "mom" "mom" "mom" and comes up with the craziest thoughts and questions all day long. I think I need to go house sit somewhere to get some peace and quiet. Ha! Hope your day is great. Tammy

  34. dinner at 8 (or later) is not un common at all around here:) What fun for your daughters to be house sitting, I used to house sit with my cousins and it was so much fun pretending we had our own house. How sweet that they keep calling home

  35. What a beautiful dinner. Love your banner photo; it's you!

  36. Finally found time to leave a comment on this post. My mister and I don't get too much time to ourselves since our youngest are 10 & 13, but when we do, it's typically dinner in town at our favorite pub. But, late dinners all summer are the norm here -- too much work to be done while the sun shines! Of course dark is coming earlier and earlier these days, so dinner is coming earlier, too. :) So, what I want to know is, did you make the call???

    Blessings, ~Lisa

  37. Make me smile. At least you had dinner with just the two of you.... eventually. Hopefully you were able to make it through without too many interruptions, but those are good interruptions, yes?

    Blessings!
