"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! simple folk

What's it like to be simple folk?

*It means that you get your clothes from goodwill, (or you make them yourself with fabric that you get from goodwill).
The summer blouse Erin is making right now from a vintage sheet will certainly be more original and chic than anything she could purchase at the department store... and will have cost only $2.00... and will have left her with scraps to make a matching headwrap, or zippered pouch, or...

*It means that your landscaping has nothing to do with 'street appeal' but everything to do with kid appeal.
Swing sets, teeter totters and forts are considered lawn art... as is the colorful array of laundered linens breezing on the line...

*It means that summer entertainment comes from a sprinkler and a trampoline rather than a day at the water park.
Just place the sprinkler under the trampoline and jump for a misty summer sensation...

*It means that when dad comes home, he doesn't change out of a suit, he showers off the workday grime... He's our blue collar treasure...

*It means that we find kids who harmonize while doing chores more entertaining than a headlining band.
Especially when they can produce a funky backbeat with the vacuum cleaner...

*It means that your household pets lay eggs... well, not all of them.
We find great satisfaction in the eggs we gather each day, not to mention the antics of hens on the loose...

*It means that you find it important to take cookies to the new neighbors...
Even when several of the houses around you have become rentals, hence frequent turn around, hence many more cookies... hence many more relationships...

*It means that you fully understand that relationships are the greatest of treasures.
Therefore you should be baking 24/7.  ;)

*It means that you know that your Creator God has given you everything you need and you are thankful, thankful, thankful.

How priceless is your unfailing love!
Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life,
in your light we see light.
Psalm 36:7-9

This list is just a sampling... feel free to add to it!

  1. Debbie, I would so enjoy being one of those neighbors. It is hard to add anything to your list!! In our home, it also meant that we were all around the dinner table each night. blessings ~ tanna

  4. Dear Debbie,

A wonderful list, indeed! I'm glad that not ALL your pets lay eggs (tee hee!). :) Let's add "Bare feet are the footwear of choice from spring to fall, saving all sorts of laundry and shoe-searching parties" to that list!

  10. I love this list..oh done the sprinkler and trampoline many times....and the one that just touched my heart so deeply is the cookies to new renters. Since we are now renters...first time in my life...always owned until 3 years ago, that is really special. It seems to be me that takes the cookies when we enter a new neighborhood...hoping they will accept the new renters. So that blessed my hearts...each of those renters has a story to tell....I know I now have one!!

  15. Ever notice how I comment really early or really late? I guess that's called burning the candle at both ends. Gotta get back into my school routine...
This is an inspiring post, Debbie! Too often we (I) settle for the "easy" instead of the "simple." Life's simple pleasures are really the best. Gifts from His hands are always good.

  19. I love this Debbie! I'm proud to be a make-do sort of lady. It is so much more fun to be create in life, than to just go out and buy, buy, buy.
I'd love to see your daughters blouse from that sheet. It sounds like the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree!
    Blessings,
    Kimberly

  20. Ohhh, I would love to have you as my neighbour! We could be simple folk together -- although I have no laying animals. I would love it if I did though.
