"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! patterning...

Today I am showing that I did indeed finish my Elizabeth Zimmerman hat!  Next time I will begin the patterning lower on the hat.  But,  I was able to try it on a 2 year old head today and be still my heart... my niece is gonna love it!  I felt bad when Ellie pulled it off of her head and said, "my take it home?"  Guess who gets the next one?

I finally broke my own rule by seeing The Help before reading it.  My daughter was in town so we grabbed my mom, and 3 generations drove over to Bend for a girls night...  If you haven't seen the movie... do.  If you weren't planning on seeing it... change your plan.  I'm hard to please but I loved the movie.  I found myself equally crying and laughing, amazed at the human spirit (both good and bad).  A friend brought me the book yesterday and I started it last night.  She read the book and saw the movie and she assured me that she wasn't disappointed in the Hollywood rendition.

  2. I'm glad to hear the movie is not a disappointment after the book. I devoured the book.
I love that sweet girlie hat - so delicate looking.
P.S. Is that Polish pottery in your banner photo? My friend has a very similar pattern. Very pretty.

  3. Oh, that sounds most cruel to do to a two year old.....have her not just see such a fine piece of work, but FEEL it, too!! Quick. Get that next one made. I haven't even met Ellie, but I really think she should have it by tomorrow.

I haven't seen the Help, yet, either. I'm determined to read the book first, which is on my shelf. Might I give in?

    Beautiful work, Debbie!!

  4. So glad the movie is good, I read the book last year and it is pretty hard to beat. Amazing read. I'll be straight into town when it opens here (another MONTH to wait!)

  5. Sometimes I think seeing a movie version before reading the book can avoid some of the disappointment with the Hollywood version - I guess because you haven't come up with such a vivid idea of your own on how things should look!

The hat looks so cute :)

  6. OK, Debbie I'll take your word for it and see the movie. I think it's still playing here, I'll check.

  8. I'm itching to see the movie, but am waiting to see it when my mom is here in two weeks. I know she'll love it (and she can read my copy of the book, too!).

    That's such a cute hat!

  11. "my take it home?" = sweetness

Hmmm it hasn't been on my list but maybe I will change that.

  12. Well I will take that as good advice. I had decided I wasn't going to see it or read the book just because it is just to trendy and I don't do trendy.
But since you liked it and like the book I might reconsider.
I love the hat you made. I really like the colors.

  13. Just as Farm Girl above, I was avoiding reading the book because it was so popular. Usually I'm disappointed in those books. But maybe I'll have to reconsider.

I hope to get some of EZ books and DVD's soon. It is on my wish list! [o=

  16. Hmmmmm...I have neither read the book nor seen the movie yet. But since I value your opinion, I may need to "rethink my plan"! :-D

  17. You'll love the book, Debbie! I was a little frustrated at subtle changes made in the movie, but all in all I liked it quite a bit and shed many a tear while munching on my popcorn.

I'll have to figure out the post scheduler; I've never used it myself and I can see by your example here what a blessing it would be to use it!

    Happy reading, ~Lisa

  18. Yay! What an adorable hat. Yes, disappointing little people is hard. I still owe Jack and Brett a hat each. Maybe I will have to see that movie after all. I've heard from many places that it's very good.

  19. Read the book and couldn't put it down. In fact I was upset when it ended. So when the movie came out I RAN to see it.
You probably wont' get to your comments today or maybe tomorrow because you'll be reading the book.
    Enjoy!

  20. I keep hearing the same and we be starting the book soon.

  21. Love the adorable hat...too precious.

I am almost finished with the book and then will see the movie...since I am not a big fiction reader, except for children's books, I have enjoyed getting through this large book, it just holds you and engulfs you in the characters. Funny I will read through 1/2 dozen smaller ones and get intimidated by the size of a book.

Enjoy it...you will find yourself thinking about the characters and this time period in history...and sadly how some it is still true today in different packages

  23. The movie has become one of my favorites, I laughed and cried, too. I am waiting for a friend to lend me the book. The hat is adorable. Think you should open an Etsy shop. :) xo

  26. I Just love the shade of pink on the little hat (we call them beanies in Aust).
I haven't heard of the movie either. Is it a new release in the U.S.? If so, I will certainly keep an eye out for it when it comes down under!

  27. You will like the book better. I read it far enough ahead of the movie that I wasn't bothered by little Hollywood changes...the spirit of the story is still strong.

  28. I 100% agree Debbie! the book was amazing and the movie did not disappoint!

  29. So you liked the movie? I figured that like most movies, the book is always better and didn't want Hollywood to spoil it for me. Maybe I'll go to this one...or wait to rent it. The hat is so sweet!

  31. I think I cried ten times as I watched The Help!
I ordered Elizabeth's DVDs. I can't wait for them to come.

  32. I read The Help and loved it. Haven't wanted to see the movie because it seems the movies are never as good as the book. You make me consider going.

LOVE the hat, Debbie! Oh, I know you will be whipping one out in no time for little Eklie!! I bought Elizabeth Zimmerman's book! Yea! Haven't had a lick of time to sit and read, but I am really looking forward to it. And, I still need to check our library for the DVDs. Have a wonderful day. blessings ~ Tanna

  33. Putting a hat on a baby head is - amazing. So satisfying. The hat just blooms there doesn't it?

Book and movie are a good match. Some things are in the book that are a little - ummm - more than I expected. Reading things in words is sometimes more violent than seeing them. And there are a few scenes - I am sorry, though, that you did not read about the wonderful woman who took Minny on in the book first - because the movie, while it does capture her very well - leaves out the mystery and frustration, and the poignance.

You'll enjoy 99% of the reading.
