a christmas gift!

Elizabeth and I are making a hat.  I've made hats before.  I've done stripes and cables, but this is my first time patterning.  Liz and I (I'm the only one she let's call her Liz) spent the afternoon chatting and knitting... If you've never had the opportunity to sit in on one of her lessons you are really missing out.  She is wonderfully entertaining.  Her accent is at once delightful and tactfully intimidating.  In fact, you wouldn't dare not follow her advice.  She may give you permission to do whatever you like but, "you will not receive my blessing"  to quote Elizabeth.  (I call her Elizabeth when she is being stern).

Elizabeth Zimmerman's Knitting Workshop is a treasure.  My daughters love to sit with me for a bit and alternate between watching closely (enthralled), and giggling at her wit and idioms.

I was so proud of myself while patterning.  I kept calling people in to watch.  Of course, they were duly impressed!  I don't think they were faking it.  Me juggling my two balls of yarn, one moment throwing the right hand yarn, the next snagging the left hand yarn continental style.  If I do say so myself it is quite impressive.  This little hat is a wool mohair blend.  The pink is a soft cotton with a bit of sparkle.  My 3 year old niece will receive it for Christmas.

Yes, I've officially started my Christmas projects.  One more reason to be pleased with myself!

Blessings, Debbie

  3. You should be proud and I'm sure that Elizabeth was as well! Knitting a pattern hat with two yarns is quite impressive. When you are finished, would you please ask Elizabeth to stop by here for a visit? I have a few questions that I know she can answer and I'll make sure the kettle is on! xx

  4. LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT! And, I am so going to have to find a way to see Elizabeth Zimmerman! Is that a DVD you own or is it on TV??? I had never heard of MS. Zimmerman until recently when a friend of mine was working on her Baby Surprise Jacket. Shows my relative newbie status!! LOL! But, I keep seeing more about her and I am enchanted.

YOUR hat is precious! And, I think you have excelled in mastering a new technique.

Thank you for permission on Soul Food. =) Coming soon... blessings ~ tanna

  5. I've never heard of Elizabeth Zimmerman. Can I find her online? I could use some knitting lessons!

The hat is lovely! What a wonderful gift.

I am plotting some of our Christmas gifts...I want to do more homemade gifts this year.

  7. One can never have too many hats on the needles. They are a quick and satisfying knit! Glad you had some one on one time with "liz".

  8. Congratulations on mastering a new technique! looks like it will be a cute hat. I'm itching to get out my needles but still have miles to go with gardening and canning before that will happen.

  9. Oooooooo...knitting lessons! ~swoon~ (I really like lessons that don't require me to travel and spend a chunk of time away from home.) Does Elizabeth have lessons for the beginner?

(Still mulling over the five blogs to whom I should pass the blogger award...)

Good for you, starting those Christmas gifts. It really is fun to create gifts and think of the recipient as you are working, isn't it?

    Blessings on your day...

  10. Isn't Elizabeth wonderful!!! Even just reading her books makes you feel so confident. You really CAN do it :)

I agree with Pom Pom, I want the Knitting Workshop too. I wonder if schoolhouse press offers the dvds?

Congrats on starting the Christmas knitting. I'm just about done, but then everyone is getting something knitted this year so I had to start early.

    Can't wait to see more.

  12. I'll have to look up this woman. But, do you knit English style, or Continental? Or are you doing both???

  16. Ooo how exciting! I've been wanting the EZ dvds for awhile and hopefully someday I can join you in adding them to my collection. Very nice two-color knitting! I've been working on a pair of mittens and I'm still trying to find the most comfortable way to hold both colors.

  17. I came over from A French Village life to visit with you, sugar. I am a conservative, Christian wife, but lo and behold I'm not so young anymore although people say I sound like a teenager with this young voice. ;-) Anyway, it's nice to meet you. Sorry, I don't knit or crochet but I do love to decorate our home here in Idaho. So you're just a state away from us, sweetpea. Nice to meet you.

    xoxo,
    Connie

  21. Those glasses make Liz look fairly stern too. I don't know her, but it's fun to watch/listen to people who give instruction. The personality always shines through.

Hooray for starting up your Christmas projects. I'm still working on my late summer quilt project.

  25. Hello My dear backdoor friend, read your previous post, and am glad we are backdoor friends, those are the best.
Your colors for you hat are absolutely beautiful, and I think I need to get this DVD, to learn and be entertained too. She looks so cute.
    Thanks for sharing.

  26. I wish you lived close enough for me to stop by one afternoon with my yarn and needles so we could watch it together! I know I would enjoy it immensely, the video and the company. I truly love reading her knitting books too.

  27. Wondering how to find her. Like I could sit still enough to watch. Though sitting and knitting WITH is a little different than sitting and watching horse training vids - which you cannot exactly do at the same time there in your living room. Guilt - sitting. Breathe. Breathe.

  28. Oh I love those videos. She makes you feel brave!! Clarice

  29. I have not so much as thought about Christmas gifs, and there you are learning to make a hat. Awesome and inspiring! (Not that I'm going to make a hat or anything...)
