there's no place like home!

I was concerned because a couple of our hens have been playing Houdini lately.  They are escape artists.  I was worried that if they could get out of their fence and into the backyard, they could in all practicality then get out of the backyard fence to dangerous freedom.  The problem is that once out, they just don't seem smart enough to get back in.  They want in, and as soon as I come outside they run to their gate.  I shouldn't have worried.  All is under control.  I think our Morkie (Maltese, Yorkie) must have a little Border Collie in him!  He at least has little man dog syndrome...

Well done little man dog...
And Houdini...  You do that again and I'll change your nickname to Einstein!

Blessings, Debbie

  2. Morkie, The Chicken Herder! You could hire him! Are you going to clip their wings? I didn't realize your pen was open so they could fly out. I have to have mine completely enclosed due to everything that wants in for a free chicken dinner. xx

  11. I can't believe you got all of that! Amazing. What a fun story. Once I had my golden retriever puppy (6 months old) blocked into the kitchen area with his crate in the doorway. I came home and he was in the living room on the other side of the crate that had not moved...hm,mmm. So, I call her back to the kitchen and she just jumped on the crate and walked over. This was a wire crate, not molded plastic. I can only imagine she saw the cats do this and figured how hard can it be if cats can do it????

  12. Great shots! We have a group of escape artists and a helper like Morkie too. Jack the dog is our chicken wrangler, they run when they see him coming!

  13. Fun!

Have you ever clipped their wings? If you do they will not be able to fly.

    Just a thought.

  14. I can't believe you managed to capture the whole photo story! That's just too terrific. I found myself scrolling back through and studying each picture.

And "morki" is the cutest dog combo name since peekapoo.

  17. Debbie, I'm so scatterbrained....yes I'm zone 9. I guess I was thinking about our previous conversation. Thanks for pointing it out. Don't tap into my wisdom because I obviously don't have any:)Patti

  19. Kudos to "little man (dog)"...he has talent, and is certainly earning his keep! And kudos to you for this documenting this highly entertaining photo-story! :-D

Sorry for your commenting troubles yesterday. As an avowed non-techie who keeps trying anyway, I feel your pain. My son once asked me (after I cried "HELP" for yet another computer-related situation), "Mom, do you ever NOT have trouble?" Well, actually no, son.

But you can write me a "book" anytime. It's always a joy to chat with you, friend. And I'm glad to know that you're feeling up to phone chats and visits.

    Love, Cheryl

  21. Now this made me smile this morning. I LOVE the photo where "Houdini" and "Morkie" are staring each other down. Those chickens may want to stroll around for a bit outside, but they know they have it too good at home. xo,

  23. Hee he a Houdini Hen. And what a GOOD doggie. I don't think those chickens will be able to out smart him!

I can't wait to get a chicken house/goat barn maybe next year. ((happy dance)) There is nothing like fresh eggs and milk.

    My MIL use to have chicken and not only did it have the side fences it had a mesh on top too. She said it was to prevent hunting birds from taking the chickens but now I am wondering if it also had to help keep the chickens in. [o;

I loved getting a peek into your farm!

    Blessings and ((HUGS))

  26. I'm no expert on spinning but the wash and thwack is the finishing touches I put on my yarn when I'm done. After plying I let it sit for a day to let it rest and the twist to release some energy. Then I give it a good soak for awhile. After that I get as much water out as possible and then I beat it (and I mean really beat it) against the side of my bathtub. It loosens up the fibers and fills out the yarn a bit more, making it a bit more even and fluffy. I did it on some grey merino the first time and it turned out so gorgeous I've been regretting giving it away as a Christmas present ever since... LOL! I can't remember where I heard about doing this to your yarn, but I'm so glad I did because it really adds so much to the end product. :)

  35. Hi Debbie,

I am trying to catch up on a little bit of blog reading. This is such a cute and funny post! Your little dog looks a little like my first childhood dog, Pepper, he was part maltese and poodle. He was black like your little guy here but he didn't have any brown, just black & white. He was a smart & cute little guy too...:) Your chickens better mind the boss!

I hope your day is a wonderful one!

    xoxo...Gloria
