"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! fourth bliss

We have celebrated the 4th of July the same way for almost 20 years now.  The A's & B's travel down from the valley to spend their vacation with us.  On the morning of the 4th we wake up to  streets lined with little flags that a local real estate agency sponsors...it looks wonderful.  My parents usually show up before the Chamber breakfast and grab anyone who wants to head over with them.

Throughout the morning more people show up. There's the M's and this year we will also enjoy the H's. Always my sister and her family and my brother with his.  Everyone calls our house home base as they head to the park (which is right behind our house) for our patriotic celebration.  There are food and craft booths, kids games, a hay maze, a country music 'headliner' interspersed with local performers, all spread the length of our lovely park with it's creek running through the middle.

Park activities end at 3:00 so everyone drags their chairs and picnic quilts to our backyard and we fire up the BBQs.  After dinner we set off fireworks in the street, eating our pie and ice cream until we hear the big display being shot off the butte.  Now we grab those same mobile chairs and blankets and shift to the front yard where we line up to enjoy the production.  When all is through, everyone is blissfully exhausted. Sleepy children are bundled into cars for long rides home.  Larry and I usually do a quick spruce up on the yards and enjoy the quiet nighttime stars for a short while before calling it quits.

It's really a wonderful evening and the more the merrier.  So, consider yourself officially invited for next year. You don't have to call ahead, just show up with a side salad and we're good to go!

Blessings, Debbie

  1. Hmmmmm. Maybe the G's will have to show up next year :) Sounds like great fun.

Last night we sat out on our front porch and watched the neighbors shoot off their works. They've been practicing for a couple of weeks, but last night might have been the real thing...

Tonight is a BIG display, but we're such early-to-bedders that we might not be awake when they are scheduled to start :)

  10. Fun! We are sipping our coffee now and will soon be out the door to drive to our Hometown for the 4th festivities. There's a huge parade and then activities in the park, a lot like your Hometown. The grands will take a ride on the merry-go-round that is at the carnival downtown. We won't go to the rodeo, but there are 3 performances over the weekend. It's a jolly time. I hope your day is loads of fun.

  13. Wow, that sounds like something out of a book. A prefect 4th. Poulsbo had it's fireworks last night. My mother lives downtown. The girls walk to the bay (3 blocks away), got a funnel cake and watched the fireworks on a friends boat. Such fun xoxo Clarice

  19. Hi there,

Thank you for visiting my blog! I actually thought you were another Deb who comments now and then and doesn't have a blog. I enjoyed perusing your blog. I have a LOT of tea cups and I thought about not getting them back out when we move to our new house. I like your idea though of having a tea party and letting everyone take their cup home with them! And that bedroom ain't nothing compared to my 'craft/clutter' room! I have a sewing box exactly like your btw! THe goldish/yellow plastic one. I do. Sounds like you have a very fun Fourth celebration. I would love it. I think it's my favorite holiday. Summer, no gifts, patriotic, picnics, swimming, ice tea, lemonade, laid back summer time family fun!
