"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! compost compote anyone?

I greet you this fine day with another recipe.  This is a little something that I've actually gotten quite adept at.  I am considering writing a book on the finer art, but I'm not sure of the market.  Is there anyone else out there who whips up a batch of this daily?

I have to say that this really was kind of funny.  It happened quite randomly with additions throughout the day. When I ended up with the strawberry ends that looked marvelous balanced on top, I realized that I had a Dish De Jour.

The deal was sealed when my husband came in and I saw his eyes light up, then get quizzical, then he turned around with kind of a nasty expression and asked, "what's that?"  Hee hee.  Dinner babe.

COMPOST COMPOTE

First:
mound coffee grounds upside down, coated with filter

Add:
        1 corn cob
        3 egg shells

Top with:
        ramen noodles and strawberry ends

Serve with:
side salad and green onion garnish

Taunt the hubby and after you've had a good chuckle, feed to compost bin... (the compote, not the hubby :).

Blessings, Debbie

  2. At first glance I was going to say, while it's colorful I think it needs a new name before it catches on! But upon further review, the name suits it just fine:@)

  4. Funny!

I put all of ours in a bucket throughout the day...then my little guy takes it to the compost pile out by the garden. It doesn't look as pretty as yours though! :) But it does make lovely soil.

  5. hahaha! it IS kind of pretty. . .in a creepy way. we were composting religiously till the weather turned warm and fruit flies took over my kitchen. i stopped collecting the food scraps and took drastic measures and the little nasties have gone. i am kind of afraid to start up again.
yours is the most inspiring compost i've seen! :)

  6. It really does look appealing! I compost daily, but it doesn't look nearly as attractive as yours does. Mine just gets thrown in an old tin coffee can and then makes it's way to the compost bin outside. Have a great start to your week.xx

  10. How artistic. I always say you can find beauty in anything, but I never thought about a bowl of scraps for the compost.

  15. It is very pretty and my chickens would have loved it well not the coffee grinds.
    Just a work of art.

  16. Debbie, this is brilliant! I think you may have a new career as a food stylist, if you can make the garbage look this good. xo

  17. Who knew it! I've been making it upside down all these years. I use the filter to hold it all and then compost it. More like a cupcake, I guess.

  18. So funny! Really cute!

This reminds me of grandmother, who passed away at 105. In her later years, she lost her ability to think or remember. Mostly she did things by rote and habit. She lived with aunt, who would keep her busy each morning by placing a bowl of fruit and veggie scraps at grandma's place at the table. With a small paring knife, grandma would cut them into perfect, tiny bits. They were then taken outside to the compost heap. Grandma loved her task --- and everyone was happy.

  19. It kind of looks like a molded (not moldy) jello salad :)

And about the Miss Read books, you really ought to try them. The book I showed is a book club edition that contains 3 of them. It kind of helps to read them in order but I guess it wouldn't be necessary. They are sweet & charming - about life in an English village & countryside.

  25. How silly! But this is really how it is, isn't it? We tend to give all our cast-off greens to our hens, though, and they love us for it. :)

  26. I love your artsy compost, ha,ha. It looks good enough to eat.

I use my coffee grinds on my growing carrots to deter carrot flies who lay their pesky eggs at the base.

  30. I was thinking it looked pretty tasty...the coffee filter was looking like phyllo dough or some such...the strawberries on top were the best! What fun....

  31. I get why your husband's eye's lit up. It really looks real! We have compost salad here, but I like your creativity far better.
