little bibs ~ for littlest women

Oh my goodness did I have fun whipping out these pink, pink bibs with chunky cotton yarn from my vintage stash.  You will of course remember me mentioning the baking babies...  Well, one is done and came out of the oven a couple of weeks ago (Makenna is just lovely by the way).  Shame on me for not having anything finished for her!  My gnomelet needles are still in 'time out' but will hopefully show themselves repentant soon.  Seeing as I didn't want to be caught empty handed again I found this pattern in my knitting notebook.  My friend Linda shared this with me last year and boy was it a breeze...  If I can find out where she got the pattern I will add it to this post later and place a button for the bib in my sidebar.  But of course, looking at it you can tell you'd have no trouble at all just winging it!  (I didn't show a picture of the closure but it's just a button hole and button.)

What I am reading  ~ Little Women... again!  When Amanda at {the habit of being} asked what our favorite childhood book was for her give away (which is still going on, by the way), this was my answer.  I read it when I was a young teen and then again as a read aloud to my young teens.  I just love Louisa May Alcott. She is wordy, but in a good way.  I love her vocabulary and the rich personalities she gives her characters. It's easy to get lost in another time and in a completely 'foreign to us' expectation of decorum that is utterly beyond reach for one Josephine March!

"Mother, did you go away and let everything be, just to see how we'd get on?"  cried Meg, who had had suspicions all day.
"Yes: I wanted you to see how the comfort of all depends on each doing her share faithfully.  While Hannah and I did your work, you got on pretty well, though I didn't think you were very happy or amiable" so I thought, as a little lesson, I would show you what happens when everyone thinks only of herself.  Don't you feel that it is pleasanter to help one another, to have daily duties which make leisure sweet when it comes, and to bear and forbear, that home may be comfortable and lovely to us all?"
"We do, mother, we do!" cried the girls.

  1. Oh those bibs are adorable! So cute. Baby things are the best to knit, aren't they? :) Yay for Little Women! I've yet to dip into it this time around from the library, but I will soon!

  7. Hello Debbie, thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I love to discover new blogs too, and am pleased to find yours. Your bibs are wonderful and I adore the little hangers, so sweet. I remember reading Little Women when I was young and wish I had kept the book. I seem to remember the opening line was "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents" (or something like that!)... such a wonderful book.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your week. Abby

  12. Those bibs are perfect! I do hope you are able to make a link to the pattern because I'm not yet too much of a patternless knitter :oS.

I did Little Women as a read aloud with the children one year. I have to confess I found it very tedious. I think it's because I was reading aloud and well, the kids weren't always in the mood to listen. I have Emma sitting on the shelf waiting to be read this summer.

    Blessings!

  14. I need to knit one of those bibs on a larger scale for myself. Cannot eat fast food without getting it all down my front. Aren't those childhood favorites the best? Just finished reading L.M. Montgomery's Anne's House of Dreams. I think I enjoyed it more now than when I was a kid!

  17. I would much rather put that nice soft bib on one of the grandbabies than those stiff, probably made in another country, bland ones!

And you selected one of my favorite spots in the book Little Women. Isn't that a priceless word?

It's been a while since I read that book, now you inspire me to reach for it on my bookshelf. Nice summer reading!

  21. I don't think I would ever be too snobby to sign your book. :)
I have the same copy of Little Women. One of my first memories is sitting next to my mother in her bed while she read Little Women and snuggled next to her. She would show me a letter in a word and I would look for it in each sentence. I couldn't have been two or three. I have her copy and I have loved that book all of my life. It is funny how you change.
I was always Jo, the writing and everything, now of course I am Marmee.
    I hope I don't turn into Aunt March. :)
Thanks for your sweet comment by the way, it made me laugh.

  27. I really love those bibs. I really wish I had some talent like that. I've tried. Alas...

I also loved Little Women. It's a very favorite book. I had a wonderful copy given to me by my grandmother and made the mistake of putting it in my classroom library when I was teaching.

And you can guess what happened.
I never put a sentimental book out there again.

    Your copy looks fabulous!

  32. OK. Why did I never think of knitting a bib for my children when they were little? Just like all good ideas, it seems obvious once you see/hear it. I'm not sure they would thank me if I made one now!!! Loved "Little Women". I read the others in the series, but LW is still the best.

  33. If only my "life lessons" turned out as well as Mother's! Those bibs are so cute.

  39. I bought a copy of Little Women a couple of years ago and devoured it, only to realize that the edition was in two volumes and I only had the first!
I still haven't finished it, but it's on my ever-growing list.
    Sweet little aprons :)

  40. Very sweet bibs! And the book --- also a fav of mine. My personal copy is old and plain, but I remember the kind you have --- with the pretty picture on the front. Such emotional word pictures are created in my mind from the pen of Louisa! When I was in 5th or 6th grade my mom and sis and I went to see a university drama group present the book as a play. It took three nights of acting, maybe three hours each time, to act out the entire book. I TOTALLY LOVED the experience and wished it could go on forever!

  44. And I forgot to say how I love those bibs! A co-worker who's an excellent knitter says she dislikes cotton yarn, because it hasn't much give. Do you find it so?

I think I'd like the instructions for that.

  45. Really adorable bibs! I have this book on our shelves but haven't opened it for a long time. Summertime just might be a perfect time to do so :)

  46. I love the bibs,,,they are soooo cute! What a nice gift!

Your Little Women book is the sweetest too. I didn't read that book until I was a grown woman (right before the Little Women movie came out at the theater...the version with Wynona Rider). I cried,,,and cried...:) She is wordy, but in such a good way....I agree. What a wonderful summer read!

    xoxo...Gloria
