"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! when men rise to the occasion

I'm blogging Mother's Day pictures today since this is of course one of THE most important holidays of the year.  Problem is I got so into the pampering that I never took out my camera.  Erin took a few shots as things were just getting rolling so although I'm sorry I don't have the full kitchen with all of my wonderful cooking brothers, I am glad to have these.

We have a tradition at our fellowship of the men cooking breakfast (and cleaning up afterward) for all of us moms.  It's amazing.  Do you know that men take food very, very seriously?  They do.  We women were to arrive at 9:30 to enjoy what the men had been laboring over since 8:30.  Our kids definitely contributed too, Audrey adding beautiful cinnamon rolls to the menu.  The home where we meet is the size and design of a lodge.  There are 2 stoves, 3 ovens and 2 sinks in the beautiful, huge kitchen so there is plenty of room for all of the chefs.  And let me tell you I'm not kidding when I call them chefs.  From the oldest to the youngest (We had a 9 year old at the end of the line-up in the apron he made himself flipping pancakes on the griddle) amazing fare was finding it's way to the serving line.

We had scrambled eggs with green onions and mushrooms, asparagus crepes, hashbrown potatoes, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, toast, pork loin, sausage, bacon, a gorgeous fruit salad, the aforementioned cinnamon rolls, donuts, home-made orange julius' and coffee.  I'm just sure that I'm forgetting something... It was incredible.  And there is nothing like the smile on the faces of men who are cooking together.  It must be some crazy endorphin thing because you almost felt 'high' just walking through all those happy men.  What a way to start the day.  Why don't we do this everyday?  I'm the first yes vote.. any others?

My own sweet mama and daddy came and we even borrowed a grandma since mine is on the other side of the continent.  It was a time of sharing and partaking, both of food and love..

...I decided to go way back and include Erin's ultrasound picture in my post.  This is from 18 years ago and I still get teary remembering the first time I saw her.  I think I was about 8 months along here and I can't believe how much she still resembles the wee thing she was at this time.  Aw, memories.  That's what Mother's Day is all about.  The old ones and the making of new ones.

Thanks Erin for making this ridiculous Mother's Day greeting a new addition to my dorky daughter memories!

Blessings, Debbie

  1. From the looks of that photo, yes - she looks exactly the same as she did then! :D

My mouth is watering now. Happy Mothers' Day!

  2. My father and his brothers and all my cousins are serious chefs. They get together once or twice a year and make all sorts of extravagant things. It is fun to watch men cook - they have a completely different style from women.

Sounds like a fabulous Mother's Day!!

  3. Oh. Erin's card made me laugh. I was so wrapped up in pondering about whether they had ultrasound photos 18 years ago, that I wasn't expecting the card!

I'm going to be a "No" vote. Somehow having men cook a special breakfast more than once or twice a year would make it less...special. Although, your breakfast does sound rather good.

  6. What a treat to have a gourmet breakfast prepared for you! The cinnamon rolls look so delicious. The men at our church had a breakfast for the ladies on Saturday but we were on the soccer field so couldn't make it this time. I think it is such a great way to serve the ladies :)

  8. Mow that's what I call a fun Mother's Day breakfast. I love the young little man with the big apron cooking his pancakes. It's never too early to recruit young cooks. I think that this is a great way to celebrate Mother's Day.

My breakfast was also cooked by men from my husband Brotherhood also yesterday but we had to pay for our breakfast.

    Hugs,
    JB

  10. *Deb, I did not do the embroidery you were admiring - my mother bought it years ago from an elderly English lady who owned a cottage across the street from my aunt's, and she was selling the place, so had a tag sale. I'm guessing she didn't do the work either. But I've always loved it - guess I'm a born anglophile.

  11. The ultrasound is just too funny..ha
That is such a wonderful idea...for all the men/brothers to get together like that...and the very young men too! (and sweet of Audrey)
And to think it wasn't your kitchen (or any of yours) so you could come home to a clean house to relax at the end of the day!

  14. Oh my goodness, what a feast, and your description of the men and how much fun they had makes the feast even yummier. This isn't the kind of thing a woman can orchestrate, but it is splendid when real chefs take on the project....the men at my church did it this year but I didn't get to eat it. :-(
