"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! precursor to an apple marathon

I'm not quite ready to commit to canning or freezing but we girls were more than eager to dig into the box of apples and fill this house with the aroma of fall.  Some of the crisp, juicy Jonagolds and Melroses were peeled, sliced, cored and set to simmer with sugar and cinnamon for a thick applesauce, while a crust was prepared to recieve the rest.  We coaxed our boy over with the promise of dinner and pie if he would bring the ice cream.  Now I sit at this computer feeling deeply satisfied.  Satisfied that comfort food really is a comfort, that my girls are going to be rockin' wives and that we are blessed with appreciative men (you know the old adage, the way to a man's heart...).

  6. I know exactly the feeling of comfort that you are describing. You're right, and I had never thought about it. Comfort and satisfaction go hand in hand, don't they?

    And the pie looks delish!

  15. Okay, Debbie, you've done it now! I've already wiled away my one day off this week in Blogworld trying to catch up on some blog reading - waaayyyy behind! I've got document deadlines for school I MUST do today - and now - after seeing all those wonderful apples and baking and it being a rainy, chilly fall day - I will HAVE to spend some baking time myself! Not that my Ed will mind (I've promised him my meatloaf for dinner tonight before church) and I could use a new something for a splendid afternoon tea break. Looks like you and the girls had a great time - remembering when my Bethany and I filled our house with apple peels and crockpot sauce smells. She's working all day. Ah . . . me . . .
    Joy!

  23. Debbie, on giving up the wheat and sugar. It really isn't hard like I thought it would be. My husband did it too so it is easy. I felt like I was getting sicker and sicker and my premenopause just was getting worse and worse so that was one of the things the doctor recommended I try. It has helped. I would say at least 99 percent have disappeared. The depression and the itchiness and the crazy mood swings and I can remember things again and my energy level is back up. I have no cravings which is the best part.
It has been almost two months. It is so nice to feel normal again so that is why. I don't know if I could have done it but I was so desperate.
I still cook for my kids though but I stand and think how I felt before and I don't have any desire to go back.

  29. I think that it is a rule, or an unwritten law, that you have to make a pie with freshly picked apples before diving into applesauce making.

  33. Cory knows a good deal when he hears one. Fresh apple pie in exchange for a box of ice cream? Yes indeed! I am SURE that your girls are going to be "rockin' wives"...you are training them to be just that!
I can almost hear the chatter and smell those apples cooking on the stove and taste that beautiful pie...

(And thank you so much for your encouragement about my blog series. You cannot imagine what it means to have someone whom you love and admire to leave such life-giving words! Hugs to you!)
