baby love and a country diary

This week I have actually made progress on my Baby Love.  A row now, a row later... they begin to add up! It's been fun seeing this pattern take shape.  When I finally finished the first row of blocks and saw hearts... It really was baby love!  The pattern is now available at  Meg's Little Bit of Knittery Etsy shop.

I'm using Fishermen's wool by Lion Brand Yarn.  I'd like to say that I chose this after an exhaustive search considering look and feel.  But truth is, I was eager to cast on and this was the only wool I had enough of in my stash.  Although this was a rather humble beginning... I'm loving it!  I love the deep brown color and it is knitting up soft with a wonderful drape.  I think I'm going to knit one red heart!  Fun.

With school just around the corner I'm doing what every other home school mama is doing.  Putting together curriculum for this fall.  One of our favorite subjects is nature study.  We each have a nature notebook where sketches, important identification information, poems and tidbits are recorded.  Every year we purpose to be more diligent in our entries but we really are better fair weather naturalists.  But this year...

I received this beautiful rendition of Edith Holden's 'for real' nature journal as a gift from a friend.  It's an absolute beauty and definitely inspires one to perfection.  We may not achieve Edith's standard but we enjoy the push none the less.

  3. You are a very talented lady. I was a homeschool mama some years ago. Homeschooling is not as popular in Australia as seems to be in USA although it is gaining momentum. The book looks like a very lovely read. I am pretty sure that your blog is the one that inspired me to read about Tasha Tudor. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

  4. One red heart sounds like such an utterly brilliant idea. I've plans to knit a shawl with chartreuse stripes fanning out from a single point on a grey background - I think I'll choose one stripe and knit it in clashing hot pink, inspired by your idea!

  5. Debbie, what can I say...the blanket is going to be beautiful. What a lovely idea to do one of the hearts in red, it will finish it off perfectly and make it a 'one of'. Clever girl.

  8. I am drooling over your book...it is just beautiful. I'm knee deep in curriculum too.
You would think after teaching this level four times before that it would be a cake walk, but each one of these kid's are so different. Oh well, it keeps me out of trouble!.xx

  10. What a lovely book! I too am looking at next years curriculum. We don't start the next grade until the first of the year. We school through the summer then take our break when we are most active around the holidays.

  12. OH, I love that blanket, Debbie. And, the one red heart is going to be PERFECT! Deep browns and reds are so wonderful together! I can relate to stash raiding! LOL!

  13. Love that brown! I just began a new brown project (not the 'quite' right brown but the project has lots of open spaces). I have a copy of that book on my shelf. It's beautiful! I'm with you - I'm trying to get homeschooling stuff together and enthusiasm for it too. I've wanted to nature study in the romantic way that I see above, but reality hits...bugs biting you, the sweat dripping down your back or your fingers freezing. However! Hopefully we'll implement something this year. Have you seen the Handbook of Nature Study blog?

  15. I've been knitting a sweater off on on throughout the summer with that same yarn. After seeing your blanket, I want to rip it out and knit up that pattern! Love Country Diary. In the 80s I made a bunch of cross stitch pictures from their charts.

  17. I love that book. My Grandmother had a copy and I used to love looking through it when I visited. It is inspirational. I so wanted to create beautiful pictures just like the ones I saw.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't wait to start a new knitting project and grabs the "best fit" yarn from my stash. Looks like you made a great choice. Can't wait to see it finished.

  18. I always dreamed of my kids having notebooks like
Edith's Holden's and we would begin each year, I ran across my copy when I was getting out books this year and I still wish and maybe I will do a sketch book on my own.
I love that you are doing Meg's pattern. It looks so pretty in brown. She is so talented and I love watching her sit and knit while we talk. I can't sew and talk. :)
You know I read about using a verse for your whole school year when I was first starting out and didn't have a clue how to go about life.
It has helped me so much.
I hope it helps you too. It was so comforting that first day and It was so nice to be told,
it is God who goes before me.
Have fun planning. It is so different only having one to teach this year.

  20. What a beautiful blanket! I think that knitting blankets takes so long, but the end result is always worth it! The book is beautiful. We're going to start Edith Holden type nature journals this next year, so we'll see... my oldest is only 7 yet. Your blog is so inspirational to me. I'm so glad to have run across it in the yarn along!

  23. That book is beautiful. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a copy.

Your blanket is looking wonderful! I love the idea of one red heart. That would be so cute. And to be honest, that yellow yarn I chose was the only amount I had enough of too. :)

  24. I loved seeing what is on your needles! It is so precious and I love that book too. I am slowly plugging away at my sock yarn slouch hat. I need to put a post up later today or tomorrow. But right now I got to get off the computer and get some cleaning done in the home library/ craft room.

    Blessings and ((HUGS))

  34. I admire mothers who home school.

I love the the beautiful illustration of a thrush eating a berry from a Mountain Ash. I have a big Mountain Ash in my yard and it's full of berries. I'll be looking for thrushes from now on... Good luck with your home schooling this year. JB

  36. Love the hearts! I actually have some of that Fisherman's wool in brown myself. I've never been sure what to do with it. Your knitting is gorgeous! Funny....I actually picked up that book a couple of years ago at a used bookstore. It's quite lovely, although I must admit I have not read it cover to cover. Enjoy!
