"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! When the cat's away...

I have a plan for today.  The girls leave at noon for a house sitting job.
But first they'll do a little learning.
Hubby will come home for lunch.  He'll do a little eating.  He'll head back to work by 1:00

a little playing

Then when they're all gone, I'll do a little of this!

I was inspired by the era depicted here on Tuesday.  I picked up this finished quilt top at my friends yard sale last summer.  She is an amazing woman who after raising 5 kids decided to go on a short term mission trip to Africa.  On that trip she saw so many children living on the streets.  She came home having 'established' an orphans home! This was not a plan, nor was it part of the mission she was on.  She now resides there permanently and recently sent a young girl home to Oregon ~ her first adoption.  Anyway, I digress...

So I paid $6.00 for the quilt top and after a bit of digging came up with this red vintage fabric for the backing for just $2.00!  When finished I will have paid $8.00 for this pristine little quilt...not bad in my book!

I have these great vintage glass buttons... There are 9 patchwork squares.
No way ~ exactly 9 buttons?
Must be providence.

maybe like this ~ only centered   : )

I'm thinking this would make a wonderful summer tablecloth for our backyard summer meals.  We'll see how brave I am after the assembly.

I'll be sure and share the finished product.  I wish I could invite you over for B.B.Q.  Then again, maybe we should wait until the snow melts!  : )

I am joining Natural Suburbia's Creative Friday

Blessings,  Debbie

  4. I love making quilts but have given it up so I can knit more. I did make a quilt top into a table cloth and I love it. I have a big front porch and we spend most of our time out there in the summer, sitting in the wicker rockers and watching the birds. Quilts on my wicker furniture and my old table make me smile and especially make me want Summer to be here, NOW!

Thanks for your lovely comment on my sweater. Not wearing it. Suppose to be 70 here today....that's a shocker for NW New Mexico on April 1!!!
    Have a great weekend!

  5. This is going to be a long comment. I love that museum.I will have to put it in my list of things to go visit when I am next in your neck of the woods, I loved, loved that horse made of barb wire? I thought it was a real horse at first. I have to show my kids. I really enjoyed the pictures and the wild animals.
So it is still cold there? We will hit 87 today. Not quite ready for it.
I like your quilt too. Very nice. Is that your hen? She looks very nice.
Thanks for coming by today. I really wish I could share our warm weather with you.
I think you might need to come and sit on my porch and bring your sewing. :)
I will visit yours in what August? When the berries are ripe. :)
    Have a lovely weekend,
    Kim

  7. Oh, that quilt top is so lovely. I love the red and white color scheme. The buttons will look perfect on it. I don't know if I would be able to use it as a tablecloth...I would be afraid of stains. But, it sure would be pretty on a table!

    Enjoy your time alone :-)

  10. You're brave! Daring to use this lovely quilt as a tablecloth that is. When things work out that perfectly I know Whom to thank. No doubt about it.

Thank you for your visit and cute comment.

I love using quilts as table clothes and I say..life is short, do what makes you happy. I believe in not saving something forever, use it and enjoy it now! Come say hi any time :D

  12. Debbie - I, too, am no spring chicken. Seems like there aren't that many of us retired and beautifully aged chicks playing with computers. And my testimony could be expressed in the EXACT words you used. Which makes me happy. My sister in law ended up with my husband's great grandmother's quilt tops - both made out of the flour sacks of the time. She showed me the one she was finishing, that was interesting and kinda nice, then offered me the other one if I wanted it. I was so excited - till I saw it. Holy cats; that thing was about THE ugliest most florid mess of hideous color I had ever seen. We both laughed till we cried. But out of the room, so the quilt top couldn't hear us.

I love the glass buttons. But I'd never be brave enough, I'm afraid, to use a quilt for a table cloth. My daughter's mom-in-law has a Thimbleberry's quilt on her breakfast room table, but it's covered with a nice, thick slab of glass.

Thanks for letting me come visit.

  13. Hey Mom,
Great minds think alike! I just finished a quilt top....trying to figure out what to use as the backing fabric. It turned out really cute! I will send you a picture :) I will call you tomorrow, I haven't called you back because we are low on minutes. :(
    Love and miss you!!

  14. Providence, indeed! Can't wait to see the finished product. I've enjoyed (what I think is) my first visit here. From the Laura Ingalls Wilder Quote under your header to profile wording to pictures to writing style, you're "my kind" of lady. I look forward to many back and forths.

  16. Looks like a fun time...and great projects. I just returned from a quilt show and so many of the quilt tops were found at garage sales, and then finished. These projects look fun.

  17. Beautiful quilt!!! IF you decide not to use it as a tablecloth, you might be able to just set it up for a photo shoot. I have a couple of quilt tops that my mom-in-law gave to me that are handsewn by her grandmother or great grandma?. I did plan on finishing them, but haven't had the time lately. They sure are pretty made out of scraps!!
