little sister's dress and the silver skates

This my friends is a double do-over.  On my needles is Tora Froseth's Little Sister's dress... again.  I made this pattern in pink last year.  The yarn is Paton's Kroy Socks yarn  purchased  several months ago from the clearance bin at Joanne's for 1.97 a skein.

We are reading Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge as a read aloud... again.  This is another of our families favorites.

As soon as the children turned from the canal they could see their parents' cottage.  Their mother's tall form, arrayed in jacket and petticoat and close fitting cap, stood like a picture, in the crooked frame of the doorway.  Had the cottage been a mile away, it would still have seemed near.  In that flat country every object stands out plainly in the distance; the chickens show as distinctly as the windmills.  Indeed, were it not for the dykes and the high banks of the canals, one could stand almost anywhere in middle Holland without seeing a mound or a ridge between the eye and the "jumping-off place."

  1. Debbie, I haven't read Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates in years. My sister's and I use to love that book. I now need to call them to see who has our copy! Thanks for the jolt to the memory! Have a fun yarn along day!

  2. Just took a peek at the first dress...yes, that's worth doing over!
    And I've never read Hans Brinker, but I've heard that it is a worthy read. (We watched the movie recently, but I know that movies rarely match the quality and depth of the book. Great story though.)

    Blessings...

  8. Love the colors in the illustrations of your book, Debbie. That's one of our favorite stories, too. :)

    I've been busy crocheting ponchos of late, and while in the process, was inspired by the shape to design a crochet dress similar to the pattern you're using. Happy creating! ~Lisa

  12. What a good matching -the book and the dress. Love the color of the yarn. Funny how it looks so different knitted vs on the skein. What is the name of the color?

  13. I got as far as printing and reading that pattern after being inspired by your last dress. But you know what? I just can't get beyond the SOCK yarn part. So much patience involved. And here you are knitting it AGAIN! So there you go, perhaps this will be a double do-over of inspiration for me :-) Your dress is looking gorgeous, and the book sounds like a charmer.

  14. This is a book that is in my home library that I still need to read to the boys. I think I really need to move it up on the book list. So many books and so little time, sigh.

    I love your knitting projects and love even more that you keep us up to date on whats on your needles. I am going to share whats on the needles tomorrow if all goes well. I am in love with bobbles right now. [o=

    I keep looking at my groovy pincushion that you inspired me to make. I am hoping to start some sewing projects soon. Life is busy and my to craft list is long. I will get there soon. [o;

  16. that is the prettiest kroy sock color. and what a sweet illustration, it's been a very long time since i've read those books. reading the paragraph reminded me of a time i was on a train traveling through holland, along with being a beautiful country, it is flat and windmills are the only height you can see for miles.

  17. That book looks so sweet, no wonder it is a family favourite! I hope to create many of those over the years :-) We're enjoying the Magic Faraway Tree at the moment. And I love the pattern you are knitting. I think I am going to try it out for my little one's 1st birthday, which (eek) is coming up in June!
