"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! what about socialization

You know the question.  It's bound to come up in conversations that begin with, "Oh, you home school?"..

So, let's talk about socialization.  The typical (and very true) response we give, addresses the standard definition.  If we define socialization as being with your peers for 8 hours a day, five days a week... then we are failing.  But, if we define it as living with respect for others and being encouraged to love and enjoy them... we are fine.

please let me out...

Personally, I think socialization is overrated.  Therefore, I just lock mine up in the house all day and make them watch life through the windows.  Shh.  Don't tell C.S.D.!

Blessings, Debbie

  2. This made me laugh. Your children don't look like they have been shut away! Although, I think you are wise to post a cat guard at the front door. Just in case!

  5. Too funny...oh we got that with putting our last in a two day pre-school...oh you are a home school family and you are putting him here for socialization...even at the end of the year they felt they needed to tell us how well he had done socially...oh give me a break, he has just turned 5! All my other 5 laugh when this comes out...if anything they had toooooooooooooo much socialization because they were home schooled

  6. Although I did not homeschool, I know many families that do(we live in an area where home schooling is big) From what I can see these kids have more varied socialization than the "average" schooled children. They have sports teams, orchestra (just for home schooled kids), enrichment programs, organized field trips, proms etc, even formal graduations.

  7. Oh, thank you for the laugh. Love the picture!!! My 14 year old daughter has had some very interesting experiences "socializing" with the kids in the neighborhood recently. It has been eye opening and, quite frankly, heart rending. Sigh.

  8. Debbie,
I admire you for being able to homeschool your children. I wish I had that luxury!
and regarding socialization...it's not all that its cracked up to be. Being a teacher, I see children, especially mine who are special ed. go through so much heartache and heartbreak because they try so hard to be loved and accepted when 'social skills' are what most lack the most; it's a no -win situation.
    God Bless you!

  9. It's the 'well socialized' school children that don't know how to deal with Ella. When she says hello to them, they look at her like she has 3 heads and need their mother's permission to say hello back. At the wool store it took Ella 30 minutes to get a little girl to play with her! If that's socialization, they can keep it!!

  10. LOL! Oh, sounds like you go along with my thinking.

My husband and I have come to the realization that those we see who were public schooled that are our age don't know how to talk to anyone but they're own age group. How is that developing social skills??

  15. I agree with Julie that family is so very important to kids for the long haul. Just try to explain that to a 10 and a 7 year old in the heat of an argument though ;). It is all good, they are over it by bedtime. Perfect post!

  16. When you do the right thing for your children, it doesn't matter what others think. Socialization is good to a point but, I agree, it's over rated. A family can learn a lot about socialization by their interaction with each other.

  18. Coming from someone who is on the fence about what to do with schooling for my girls, I agree about the socialization thing. I remember all the kids who made me feel horrible in school. And I could not get away from them as I was shut in a room with them everyday....

  19. ha ha, don't you wish sometimes they were a little less socialized? I would like a break. :)

  20. I had a lady ask me about how they learned to get along with other people without going to school. I told her I had six children, and so they had lots opportunity to learn. She looked at me and in all seriousness asked "I mean with other people who matter-not family!" Didn't even know what to say to that one!

  22. You go girl!! :) God bless you for taking the time to home school your family. It is a sacrifice, that you lovingly do I know, your children will be blessed for it. And I know God will honor you for making the sacrifice.

I did homeschool all of our three daughters for one year. Then one of them for a year by herself. I did have the aid and help of a teacher, through the school district. We had a really strong support group, and the teacher was great with all of the moms who were using the program. The other years they did go to a private, and public school. But they all have wonderful memories of the time we did homeschool. Keep up the great job, Debbie!

    xoxo...Gloria

  23. I love reading people's home-schooling techniques. Even though I've never been married, and have no children!
(better go let those kids out now)

  25. What could make a person any more insane than having to be with their peers (especially if the peers are teens) for that long? I agree with your philosophy.☺

  26. I took my kids out of Jr. high school and on because of some awful tratement towards my two deaf sons and my only daughter followed. I did not like what my kids were heading into and they are better for it.. They are all married with children and their love for family and God is strong..
