"Let's be cheerful"! We have no more right to steal the brightness out of the day for our own family than we have to steal the purse of a stranger. Let us be as careful that our homes are furnished with pleasant & happy thoughts as we are that the rugs are the right color and texture & the furniture comfortable and beautiful"! no room in the freezer

Yes!  The freezer is full to overflowing.  The mighty hunter was successful and we are prepared for the coming year.  We will feast on 100% natural, organic deer and elk that was harvested and butchered by the one who will be fed by it.  There is much comfort found in knowing every step of your food's preparation.  I am the daughter of a hunter/provider and I married one.  My daddy didn't raise no dummy!

The girls and I have been enjoying the setting of elaborate tables filled with the abundance that we can create to compliment the main attraction.  The woven tablecloth is literally covered with wood and pottery bowls that hold baked potatoes, sour cream, chives, chopped tomatoes...  oven roasted brussels sprouts sprinkled with olive oil,  fresh ground sea salt and black pepper...  Lettuce salad with toasted sunflower and sesame seeds and a caesar dressing...  Homemade rolls smeared (thinly, really :) with butter...  Sitting center stage is the marinated, peppered steaks, broiled to everyone's idea of perfection.  Mmm.  Yes, I feel spoiled indeed.

Today is Saturday and after a full yesterday of parties plus, (a medieval party and a Japanese birthday bash with a science gathering sandwiched between) the girls will most likely sleep in.  Husband will be thankful for a few extra winks but will join me shortly to curl (I curl, he sprawls) on the couch with coffee and catch up on the happenings of the week that may have somehow missed the dinner table conversation.  I love Saturday mornings when the sun is still low and we can pretend that we have nothing better to do than curl, sip and talk.  As the room becomes brighter we will slowly stretch into reality.  Yes, there are many things to be done today... but not until later.  :)

Blessings, Debbie

  1. Congrats to your hubby on his successful hunt!

Mine is hoping to get at least one deer before he has to leave hunting camp tonight but so far, he passed up shooting the only deer he's seen, thinking he'd wait for a bigger one. Maybe today. Too bad I don't even like venison...

Your Saturday morning sounds perfect. Enjoy!

  2. It sounds like you've got a head start on your holiday feasting! Will you have turkey on Thanksgiving, or venison? What it is, I know it will be delicious. :)

  3. How wonderful that you have a source of fresh food like that! That sounds delicious... You're making my mouth water! So glad you'll have a bit of down time (if even for a few hours) to just sit and enjoy.

  5. I married the same kind of man Debbie and have my freezer already stocked for winter.
Last year we put up 22 deer..ground, hams, sausage, jerky, and this year is turning out to be another good year. We share the meat with five families and donate to the hungry so I am thankful that my guys have this skill. We have a long season, Aug. 15- Jan. 1, with no limit [yes, the hunters here are blessed]. This year I want to learn to make venison pepperoni. I have never cooked elk, but my husband and son's would love to hunt one.

  6. Major hunting season started here today and from what I hear it is going well. I did not grow up in a hunting family and never learned to eat wild game, but I am looking forward to a freezer at the new house so that we can buy 1/2 a beef or something from a local farmer next year....and I want to learn to can, too. Can I come and spend a season learning in your kitchen? :)
