homespun in monet's garden

I always carry my knitting bag along with me, making sure that the knit I am traveling with is appropriate to the trip.  This past weekend we drove 3 hours to help my daughter and son-in-law move into their new apartment and to attend a wedding.  Last week I printed this pattern.  It was the perfect car project.  It took me almost the exact length of the drive to make it (at a very nonchalant pace)!  We were staying with friends and when I arrived, Sue put the vest on her antique bear and now, that's where it lives...

For the trip home, I cast on another in an off-white homespun that I picked up at the thrift at the same time as the colorful one that lives at Sue's.  Again I finished before we arrived home, all it needs is a button!

For this weeks read I decided to share another book from our home school collection.  Linnea in Monet's Garden has been a favorite in our art study with all of my kids.  We even found, years ago, a video of the book at the library that was wonderful.  They no longer have the video and they didn't upgrade to DVD.  Maybe interlibrary loan?  It's worth checking.

Just think ~ I've been in a famous artist's garden!  And I've been in Paris!  My friend Mr. Bloom was with me.  In fact, the whole thing was actually his idea.  But maybe I should begin at the beginning.
I love flowers (I'm even named after a flower), and I'm interested in everything that grows.  That's just the way I am.
And that's how Mr. Bloom is, too.  He's my upstairs neighbor.  Mr. Bloom used to be a gardener.  He's retired now, which is good because it means he has lots of time to spend with me.  Mr. Bloom knows just about everything there is to know about plants.  It seems like that, anyway.
When I go to visit him, I like to look in a book that Mr. Bloom has about the French artist Claude Monet.  Monet loved flowers, too.  He painted lots of pictures of them.  Probably his best known flower paintings are his pictures of water lilies.  Linnea in Monet's Garden

  1. That sure looks sweet on your friends bear.
I love the chunky knit look.
I don't have children at home anymore, but this would be a neat book to have if I did.

  6. What a cute little vest. I have a bag of yarn and needles that stays in my purse so I will always have something to knit.
I am a huge, huge fan of Monet and think he is on my artist list for this year. I will check my library to see if they have the book. I need some new material since with #5 "I'm" getting a little bored! xx

  11. That bear in the vest is just the cutest stuffy EVER, I think. :)
The book looks positively charming. . . wondering if I can manage to find it, as I have one daughter who is an all-things-art enthusiast and one who is an all-things-plant-especially-water-plants CRAZY!
    :)
They keep me inspired. I admire your knitting. I'll NEVER figure that one out!

  12. Very sweet. Is that a big bear or a smaller version of the vest? And the book! Love that. Ours sits on our bookshelf...hmmm...will have to take it down and look at it again.

  13. This little book is a favorite here, too. Re-doing my book shelves this week and deciding what goes on the yard sale, in the basement library, or stays in my office/studio, there was no doubt that Lennea an Monet stays here in the office. I also have a wonderful 3-D fold out garden that I've used with my kids and students. The problem is to keep little fingers away from touching and tearing it's tender parts! A lovely study glorifying the beauty of the Lord in Creation. And, as to that primitive bear of yours - DARLING!!!
    Joy!

  17. What a sweet bear! Oh my, I am in love. Years ago I taught a homeschool art class and used that book and video to introduce Monet. My kids painted the prettiest water lilies. Fond memories!

  18. What wonderful work! I love getting to see what you knit. I haven't been able to pick up the needles lately. Ohhh and I am still untangling that mess I have too. And...guess what! I ordered my swift! I am daydreaming of buying a spinning wheel one day.. because you inspired me again.

    Blessings and ((HUGS))!

  19. Ohhhh, that looks like a wonderful book! I could picture my children picking that one up regularly. It's funny how they have their favorites.

You are a very talented knitter! My projects never match my car rides. I'm happy to have one cast on and started before we arrive at our destination. I do love to take mine in the car though.

    Blessings!

  20. Debbie, You left a comment on my post about planting zones...I live in north east Florida which is zone 9. Here we can plant almost year round since we get a very mild winter. I think where you are it probably gets too cold. If you have a county extension office they usually have a master gardener who could give you more info. Patti

We so wanted to visit Monet's garden during our honeymoon...it was a little too far so we'll have to save it for the next visit. ;)

  22. Oh the vest is just precious! And yes, we loved this book and video also. The most wonderful thing was going through the book and video and then going to a Monet exhibit that had come to town.
Oh yea! I get to start this journey all over again in the fall...LOL

  26. Sounds like you have a pretty handy neighbor, I would like to have my own Mr Bloom in my neighborhood that I could consult when needed. The bear is adorable, love the way you use "road time"

  27. Perfect fit for the sweet teddy...and I love both of the Linnea books!

  28. Have never heard of that book, yet it sounds so delightful I may be seeking an interlibrary loan. I wish that I could do projects while on the road, but I am not able to because I am too easily carsick. Ditto for reading. Sweet little sweater and if ever a creature needed some TLC and a warm sweater, it is your friend's little bear. He looks plum loved to death.
